Diaspora Life
Toronto vs Ottawa, My Honest Experience
When we were preparing to move from Toronto to Ottawa, I told some of my work colleagues. One of them, a Nigerian, was surprised and said, “I’ve never seen anyone move from Toronto to Ottawa. It’s usually the other way around.”
I asked him why he thought Toronto was better. His reply was simple
“There’s more life in Toronto.”
I just smiled 😊
Having lived in both cities, I’ve come to realize that it’s not really about which city is better, it’s about what works for you and your family.
Here are 4 common differences I’ve noticed:
- Pace of life
Toronto is fast, busy, and always on the move. Ottawa is calmer, quieter, and more laid-back. - Cost of living
Toronto is generally more expensive especially rent and mortgage. Ottawa is more affordable and feels less financially pressured. - Traffic and commuting
Toronto traffic can be overwhelming. Ottawa has lighter traffic and shorter commute times. - Lifestyle and city vibe
Toronto gives Lagos, Nigeria vibes, busy, energetic, crowded, and full of life.
Ottawa gives Abuja vibes calm, organized, spacious, and peaceful.
At the end of the day, one city may feel exciting, while the other feels peaceful.
Both are great it just depends on what stage of life you’re in.
Which city’s vibe suits you more, busy, crowded, energetic or calm, spacious and peaceful.
