WINNIPEG TRAGEDY: Nigerian Student’s Passing After Plasma Donation Raises Questions

A heartbreaking story is raising serious questions about paid plasma donation centres in Canada.
Two people have reportedly lost their lives after donating plasma at centres in Winnipeg, according to a report by CBC News.
One of them was 22-year-old Nigerian student Rodiyat Alabede, who moved to Canada in 2022 to study at the University of Winnipeg. She had dreams of becoming a social worker and helping people living with disabilities.
Her close friend, Mary Ann Chika, described her as a joyful and kind person who always carried big dreams for the future.
Rodiyat passed away on October 25, 2025, after attending an appointment at the Grifols Plasma Donation Centre on Taylor Avenue.
Another fatal reaction was reported on January 30, 2026, at another location operated by Grifols in the city.
Health Canada confirmed it has received reports of serious adverse reactions from plasma donors and is currently reviewing both cases. At this time, regulators say no direct connection between the donations and the passings has been established.
The story has sparked wider conversation about plasma donor safety and the growing practice of paying people for plasma donations in Canada.
A young woman came to Canada with hope, dreams, and a desire to help others.
Her story is now touching hearts across communities.
