Why Canadians Celebrate Victoria Day
Today, many Canadians are enjoying a long weekend, fireworks, family time, and outdoor fun because of Victoria Day but do you know the history behind it? Victoria Day is celebrated in honour of Queen Victoria, who was born on May 24, 1819, at Kensington Palace. She became queen at just 18 years old and ruled for over 63 years.
Queen Victoria played a major role in Canada’s history because Canada was part of the British Empire during her reign. In fact, Canada officially made her birthday a holiday in 1845, and after she passed away in 1901, the celebration continued every year in her honour. Today, Victoria Day is celebrated on the Monday before May 25 and is often seen as the unofficial start of summer in Canada. For many people, it means fireworks, road trips, BBQs, and relaxing with family.
