Why Africans Abroad Find it Hard to Find a Spouse

You relocated for greener pastures.
You’re building your career.
You’re sending money home.
You’re chasing stability.

But when it comes to marriage?
Suddenly it feels complicated.

Why is this happening?
1. Different Dating Culture
Back home, relationships often involve family, clear intentions, and community accountability. Abroad? Dating can feel casual, undefined, and slow. “Let’s see where it goes” can stretch for years and that’s frustrating when you’re intentional about marriage.

2. Smaller Social Circles
In Africa, weddings, church, family friends, and community events naturally connect people. Abroad, many of us work long hours and keep small circles. If you’re not plugged into a strong community, meeting someone serious becomes harder.

3. High Expectations (On Both Sides)
Some men feel they must be financially “fully ready.” Some women feel they must meet certain standards, career, education, immigration status.
We’re all striving but sometimes the checklist becomes longer than the connection.

4. Immigration & Status Concerns
Let’s be honest. Trust can be tricky. Some fear being used for papers. Others fear marrying someone without stable status.
That fear can make people overly cautious.

5. Cultural Shifts
Living abroad changes you. Exposure changes mindset. Two Africans abroad can have completely different levels of adaptation and that mismatch can create tension.

6. The “There Are No Good Ones Abroad” Mentality. Some African men feel the ladies abroad are too “exposed” they prefer the ones back home.

The truth is, there are good African men abroad.
There are good African women abroad. The challenge is alignment, patience, maturity, and community.

The solution could be this:
• Be intentional about where you spend time
• Get involved in community events, church, and professional networks
• Heal from past hurts
• Be open-minded without lowering your standards

Marriage abroad is possible.
Love abroad is possible.
But it may require unlearning some expectations and relearning connection in a new environment.

Do you think Africans abroad are too selective?
Is the problem culture, expectations, or mindset?
Have you experienced this personally?
