WHO BREAKS SILENCE ON DEADLY CRUISE SHIP VIRUS OUTBREAK

The World Health Organization (WHO) has moved to calm global fears after reports of a hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship left three passengers dead and several others seriously ill.
According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the situation is NOT another COVID-19 pandemic scenario and currently does not pose a major global public health threat.
So far, eight cases have been linked to the outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius during a voyage from Argentina to Cabo Verde. Five infections have been laboratory confirmed, while three others remain suspected. Health officials say the cases are connected to the rare Andes strain of hantavirus.
The outbreak sparked international concern after passengers reportedly developed severe respiratory symptoms during the journey, prompting an emergency alert under international health regulations.
WHO explained that hantaviruses are usually spread from rodents to humans through exposure to infected saliva, urine, or droppings. While the Andes strain can spread between humans in limited situations, experts insist the outbreak remains contained and there is no sign of a wider pandemic.
Still, the tragic deaths and growing attention surrounding the cruise ship have raised fresh fears among travelers worldwide.
Do you believe global health authorities are now better prepared to stop another pandemic before it spreads?
