When Money Enters the Marriage: A Common Struggle for Immigrants in the Diaspora

One major cause of marital issues among immigrants in the diaspora is money. Many people come from cultures where the man is seen as the head of the family, and being the head often means being the main provider. But abroad, things don’t always work that way. Sometimes the woman gets a job first. Sometimes she earns more than her husband. Sometimes both partners must contribute equally or based on what each other earns for the family to survive. This shift can create tension when not handled with understanding. Some men may feel their role is being thr£atened because their wife earns more. Some women may still expect the man to carry most of the financial burden like back home, others may hide their true income to avoid taking on more responsibilities.

The truth is, money itself is not always the problem. The real issue can be pride, poor communication, unrealistic expectations, and refusing to adapt to a new reality. A peaceful marriage is not built on who earns more. It is built on teamwork, honesty, respect, and shared goals. In the diaspora, couples who see themselves as partners instead of competitors often have stronger homes.

What do you think? Should marriage finances be shared based on what each other earns, or equally, or should one person still remain the major provider? Let’s talk in the comments.
