Value of Education in Nigerian Homes

One thing about growing up in a Nigerian home, is that education is non-negotiable.
It’s not just “finish high school and you’re done.” No. You must get at least one university degree. Minimum requirement.
Parents can go any length just to make sure their children are educated. They pay school fees from their own pockets, no loans, no grants, nothing. Yet a family with 4, 5, or even 6 children will still produce university graduates. The dedication is crazy, and I love it.
Then I came to Canada and got shocked. Some people stop at high school not because of money, because government actually gives loans and grants. They just don’t feel like going further. And that mindset still amazes me.
Nigeria may have its challenges, but one thing we don’t play with is EDUCATION. We have some of the most educated and brilliant people around the world.
