US Court Jails Ghanaian Kelvin Nkwantabisa for 17 Years Over Massive $38 Million Fraud Scheme

A United States court has sentenced Ghanaian national Kelvin Owusu Nkwantabisa to 17 years in federal prison for his leading role in a sophisticated transnational email fraud operation that stole more than $38 million from victims across the United States and other countries.
According to US prosecutors, Nkwantabisa coordinated a network of fraudsters who infiltrated business email accounts, monitored legitimate financial transactions, and impersonated trusted business partners to divert payments into accounts controlled by the criminal group. The stolen funds were then moved through multiple bank accounts and shell companies in an effort to conceal their origins.
Authorities described Nkwantabisa as the leader of the US-based arm of the operation, alleging that he worked closely with overseas accomplices, directed the creation of fraudulent bank accounts across several states, tracked incoming victim payments, and supervised the laundering of millions of dollars in illicit proceeds.
His sentencing was part of a broader case involving four defendants linked to the international fraud network. US officials said the case highlights the growing threat of business email compromise scams, which continue to cost individuals and companies billions of dollars worldwide.
The 17-year sentence sends a strong message about the serious consequences of large-scale cyber-enabled financial crimes and the increasing international cooperation being used to track down and prosecute fraud networks operating across borders.
