UK Court Finds Man Guilty of Murdering Nigerian Student in Norwich

A UK court has found 28-year-old Benjamin Katabana guilty of the murder of Nigerian student Uchenna “Uche” Okirie following a fatal stabbing at a shared accommodation in Norwich, England.
The verdict was delivered after an 11-day trial at Norwich Crown Court. Although Katabana admitted to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, the jury rejected his defence and convicted him of murder.
According to investigators, the tragic incident occurred on November 22, 2025, at Somerleyton House in Norwich. Police responded to reports of a stabbing and found Uche with serious injuries. Despite efforts by emergency responders, he could not be saved.
Evidence presented in court revealed that CCTV footage captured the attack. Authorities said Uche was using his phone in a communal corridor when Katabana approached and carried out the fatal assault. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Uche died from a stab wound to the chest.
Police disclosed that Katabana later turned himself in, reportedly telling officers, “I have killed someone, I think.” The murder weapon was never recovered.
Senior Investigating Officer Alix Wright described the incident as a “violent and unprovoked attack,” adding that Katabana had allegedly lured Uche into the corridor through WhatsApp messages before carrying out the assault.
While the court has yet to announce a sentencing date, the conviction marks a significant step toward justice for Uche’s family, friends, and the wider Nigerian community, many of whom rallied together after his death and launched efforts to return his remains home for burial.
Our thoughts remain with the family of Uchenna Okirie as they continue to mourn this heartbreaking loss.
