U.S. Set to Shut Down Historic Border Road Used by Canadians

For decades, a quiet stretch of gravel known as the “Border Road” has connected lives, farms, and communities along the line between Canada and the United States.
But now, that connection is about to be cut off.
The U.S. government has announced plans to close the historic road near Sweet Grass–Countts Border Crossing to Canadian traffic starting July 2026 a move that’s leaving many residents frustrated and confused.
This isn’t just any road.
It’s a 14 kilometre lifeline used by farmers, ranchers, and locals who’ve relied on it for generations. For them, this decision means longer routes, disrupted routines, and the loss of a shared piece of cross-border history.
Many are calling the move unnecessary and out of touch, especially in communities where the border has never been a barrier but a bridge.
At a time when people are hoping for stronger unity and cooperation, this decision feels like a step in the opposite direction.
Sometimes, it’s the smallest roads that carry the biggest meaning.
