TWO NIGERIANS CHARGED IN ALLEGED $960,000 U.S. IMMIGRATION SCHEME

Two Nigerian men, Lukman Owolabi Ganiyu, a former senior U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer, and Adeniyi Akeem Somoye, have been arrested and charged in the United States over an alleged scheme involving payments to man!pulate and expedite immigration applications.

According to federal prosecutors, the alleged scheme operated from December 2019 to March 2026. Ganiyu allegedly used his position at USCIS to bypass certain standard procedures, including interviews, background checks and supervisory reviews, in connection with applications for green cards, family petitions, removal of residency conditions and U.S. citizenship.

Prosecutors allege that the pair received nearly $960,000 in payments. Investigators also cited thousands of WhatsApp messages and hundreds of phone calls as part of the evidence in the case.

Both men were arrested on September 2, 2026, and each faces up to five years in federal pr!son and a fine of up to $250,000 if conv!cted.

NOTE: These are allegations contained in a cr!m!nal complaint. The men have been charged, not conv!cted, and they are presumed innocent unless proven gu!lty in court.

Immigration applications can take time, but paying someone to influence the process can have serious consequences.
