Thinking of Working with Children, Seniors, or Vulnerable Persons in Canada? 🇨🇦

Before you start, there are some important skills, trainings, and checks you’ll need aside your educational certification. These are not just requirements, they help you provide safe and quality care.

Here are some key ones to know

1. First Aid & CPR
This training teaches you how to respond to emergencies like choking, breathing issues, or cardiac arrest. It’s a must-have for anyone working in care.

2. CPI / Safe Management Training
CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) or Safe Management helps you handle challenging behaviours safely, without harming yourself or the person in your care.

3. TB (Tuberculosis) Test
A medical test to confirm you don’t have active TB. This is important to protect vulnerable individuals, especially in care homes and hospitals.

4. Vulnerable Sector Check
This is a police background check to ensure you have no criminal history that could put children, seniors, or vulnerable people at risk.

5. COVID-19 Vaccination Record
Many workplaces still require proof of vaccination to protect residents, patients, and staff.

6. Up-to-date Immunization Records
Apart from COVID-19, some employers may ask for vaccines like Hepatitis B or flu shots to ensure overall safety.

7. Basic Communication & Caregiving Skills
Patience, empathy, and good communication are very important. Knowing how to speak kindly, listen, and support people emotionally is just as important as technical skills.

8. Driving License
Some organizations require you have a driver’s license and own a car.

Working in care is not just about getting a job it’s about responsibility, compassion, and being properly prepared.
