The Silence That Cost Too Much

For many newcomers and immigrants, speaking up feels risky.
Fear of authority.
Fear of being misunderstood.
Fear of jeopardizing immigration status.
Fear of the unknown.

But here’s the truth: silence can cost more than speaking up.

This is a story many immigrants can relate to.

A newcomer started a new job in Canada. At first, everything seemed fine. Then it began subtle comments, exclusion from tasks, quiet disrespect. Over time, it turned into harassment.

The thoughts came:
“If I speak up, will I lose my job?”
“Will this affect my immigration status?”
“Should I just endure it?”

So they stayed silent.

Weeks turned into months. The situation worsened. When the newcomer finally reported it, most of the evidence, witnesses were gone. The co-worker denied everything. What could have been resolved early became complicated and painful.

The hard lesson?
Fear and silence protect no one.

Early action matters.
Document incidents.
Report concerns early.
Seek guidance when unsure.

Silence often empowers the wrongdoer not you.

For newcomers and immigrants:
Knowing your rights, speaking up early, and asking for help are powerful tools when starting life in a new country.
