The Biggest Misconception People Tell About Immigrants Abroad
One thing that always amazes me is how some people back home talk down on immigrants who left successful careers to start over in a new country.
You’ll often hear stories about a former bank manager who relocated abroad and is now working as a cleaner. While it’s true that many professionals cannot immediately continue in the exact same roles they had back home without additional training, certifications, or licensing, that doesn’t mean their journey ends there.
For many newcomers, the first job is simply a way to pay the bills and support their families while they settle into a new environment. It is often a stepping stone, not a final destination, and not everyone starts their careers abroad as cleaners
Many immigrants go back to school, earn new certifications, gain local experience, and eventually build careers that are equal to or even better than the ones they left behind.
This is one of the reasons I dedicate a significant part of my page to celebrating African immigrants who are doing exceptionally well abroad. Their stories should inspire everyone that success is still possible when you are willing to learn, adapt, and put in the work. Success is a journey.
What are your thoughts? Do you think starting over in a new country is worth the sacrifice?
