SINGAPORE COULD PROVIDE A CHILD WITH AROUND US$55,000 IN GOVERNMENT SUPPORT — HERE’S HOW IT WORKS.

Imagine having a child and knowing that the government will provide financial support not just at birth, but throughout the child’s growing years.
That is the direction Singapore is taking.
Singapore has announced a new SG Child Support Package worth up to S$62,000 per Singapore Citizen child from birth to age 17. When existing support such as the MediSave Grant for Newborns and Edusave contributions is included, the total direct government support could reach around S$70,000 per child roughly US$55,000 or about ₦74 million at recent exchange rates.
Here’s how the new package is structured:
▪︎ S$10,000 Baby Gift
▪︎ S$32,000 in Child Credits — S$2,000 annually from ages 1 to 16
▪︎ S$5,000 Child Development Account grant
▪︎ Up to S$5,000 in government co-matching
▪︎ S$10,000 Post-Secondary Education Account top-up at age 17
On top of this, eligible children will continue to receive existing support, including a S$5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and annual Edusave contributions.
The bigger message is interesting.
Singapore is not simply encouraging people to have children. It is also trying to reduce some of the financial pressure that comes with raising them by supporting families with healthcare, education, savings and child-related expenses.
And with birth rates declining in many parts of the world, this raises an important question:
If governments want families to have more children, should they do more to make raising those children financially manageable?
Children are the future workforce, entrepreneurs, professionals and leaders of every society. Supporting families today could be an investment in the future.
What do you think? Should African governments consider stronger financial support for families and children?
