Should Canada Join the EU? A Growing Conversation Among Canadians 🇨🇦🇪🇺

A new conversation is quietly gaining attention across Canada, and it’s one many people didn’t expect.

Recent polling suggests that a majority of Canadians are open to exploring a surprising idea — the possibility of Canada having closer ties with the European Union.

According to a poll by Spark Advocacy, about 58% of Canadians say it is worth exploring the idea of joining the EU, with roughly 1 in 4 describing it as a good idea outright.
Similarly, findings from Nanos Research show around 57% expressing support for the idea of potential membership.

So what’s behind this shift in thinking?

For many Canadians, it reflects growing interest in diversifying global partnerships and reducing over-dependence on the United States, especially in a time of global economic uncertainty and shifting international relations.

That said, experts also point out that the idea is far from simple. Canada is geographically distant from Europe, and full EU membership would come with significant legal, political, and structural challenges.

Still, what stands out most is not whether it will happen, but the fact that many Canadians are even open to discussing it. It shows a shift in how people are thinking about Canada’s place in the world and its future alliances.

What do you think, should Canada explore deeper ties with the EU, or focus more on strengthening its independence?
