Record Number of Canadians Leaving the Country Raises Concerns

Canada is experiencing a surprising population shift.
According to newly released data, a record 30,092 Canadian citizens and permanent residents left the country in the first quarter of 2026, the highest first-quarter emigration figure ever recorded.
At the same time, Canada saw a net loss of 117,879 temporary residents, resulting in an overall population decline of 55,025 people between January and April 2026.
So why are people leaving?
Many point to soaring housing costs, rising living expenses, long healthcare wait times, and changes to immigration policies. For some families, newcomers, and skilled workers, the dream of building a future in Canada is becoming increasingly difficult.
For decades, Canada has been recognized as one of the world’s top destinations for immigrants, students, and professionals seeking opportunity. But attracting people is only half the battle. Keeping them may be the bigger challenge.
As governments work to address labour shortages and economic growth, these numbers raise an important question:
Can Canada retain the talent, workers, students, and families it has invested so much effort in bringing here?
What do you think is driving this trend? Would you consider leaving Canada for better opportunities elsewhere, or do you believe the country will bounce back stronger?
