OTTAWA RESIDENTS, BEWARE! Police Issue Warning as Car Break-Ins Rise by 35%

The Ottawa Police Service is raising awareness about a recent increase in thefts from vehicles across the city, particularly in Ottawa’s west and south districts.

According to police, 1,140 thefts from vehicles were reported between July and September 2026, compared with 844 during the same period last year — an increase of 35%.

In many cases, thieves have been checking car door handles and entering vehicles that were left unlocked. Items st0len include wallets, cash, credit cards, sunglasses and tools. In some cases, garage door openers have also been taken and later used to gain access to homes.

Ottawa Police are reminding residents to:
• Always lock your car doors and close the windows, even when parked in your driveway.
• Avoid leaving garage door openers inside your vehicle.
• Remove valuables or keep them out of sight.
• Keep your home’s front lights on at night.
• Report suspicious activity in your neighbourhood.
