Ontario Pushes to Legalize Pepper Spray for Personal Self-Defence in Canada

A growing conversation about personal safety is taking shape in Canada. The Ontario government is now urging the Government of Canada to review current laws and consider legalizing pepper spray for personal self-defence.
Right now, under the Criminal Code of Canada, pepper spray meant to be used on people is classified as a prohibited weapon. This means civilians cannot legally carry or use it for protection anywhere in the country.
Ontario leaders say the discussion is about giving people a non-lethal option to protect themselves, especially as concerns about safety continue to grow in many communities.
It’s important to note:
• Bear spray or dog spray is legal only for use against animals.
• Using it against a person can still lead to serious criminal charges.
For now, no law has changed yet but the request from Ontario could spark a national debate about self-defence laws in Canada.
What do you think?
Should Canadians be allowed to carry pepper spray for personal protection, or should the current law remain?
