Ontario Drivers: A Major Auto Insurance Change Starts July 1
Auto insurance is still mandatory for every driver in Ontario. However, beginning July 1, 2026, drivers can now choose to opt out of certain accident benefits that were previously included in standard insurance policies.
The Ontario government says the change gives motorists more choice and could lower monthly premiums by around 5%.
But there’s an important trade-off.
Insurance experts warn that dropping these benefits could leave drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians facing significant out-of-pocket costs for medical care, rehabilitation, income replacement, and other expenses if they’re seriously injured in a collision.
A lower monthly premium may seem attractive, but it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re giving up before making a decision.
Would you rather save about 5% on your insurance, or keep the extra accident coverage for greater financial protection? Share your thoughts below.
