One thing nobody really prepares you for when you move abroad is that you suddenly “have an accent.”

One thing nobody really prepares you for when you move abroad is that you suddenly “have an accent.”

Back home, you spoke good English.
Nobody struggled to understand you.
You were Confident. Fluent. Clear.

Then you arrive in your new country and all you find yourself doing is repeating the simplest sentences over and over again, you also find yourself struggling to understand same English you grew up with back home when they speak with you. Sometimes you just smile even when you didn’t get what was said😂 and when you speak all they keep saying is:

“Sorry?”
“Pardon?”
“I didn’t catch that.”

And you’re standing there thinking, But I’m speaking English nau😅. It can be frustrating. Sometimes even embarrassing.
But over time, something interesting happens your ears adjust. Your tongue adjusts. And slowly your accent starts shifting.

For those living abroad, let’s talk
How long did it take before your accent started changing?

Did it happen naturally, or did you intentionally work on it? What helped you improve, is it watching local TV, practicing pronunciation, speaking slower, or mixing more with locals?

And be honest do you still switch accents depending on who you’re talking to? 😂
Let’s gist 😀
