Nigerian U.S. Marine Declared Dead After Caribbean Mission Incident

The Nigerian and immigrant community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine who was declared deceased after falling overboard from the USS Iwo Jima during deployment in the Caribbean Sea.
Oforah, a Florida resident, was serving with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit when the incident occurred on February 7. Following an intensive 72-hour search operation involving Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force units, the search was suspended, and he was formally declared deceased on February 10.
According to officials, Oforah had enlisted in October 2023. He completed his training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Camp Lejeune, proudly earning his place as an infantry rifleman before deploying aboard the USS Iwo Jima.
At just 21, he represented courage, dedication, and the immigrant spirit stepping forward to serve a nation with honor and commitment. His journey reflects the many young Nigerians and newcomers who choose service, sacrifice, and purpose far from home.
“Our hearts are grieving alongside the Oforah family,” said Col. Tom Trimble, noting that the loss is deeply felt across the Navy-Marine Corps team.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident, we remember a young man who wore his uniform with pride and gave his all in service.
May his soul rest in peace.
Strength and comfort to his family, friends, and fellow Marines during this painful time.
