Nigerian Sprinter Sentenced to 27 Months in U.S. Prison Over Firearm Case

A 23-year-old Nigerian sprinter and former LSU track athlete, Godson Oghenebrume, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison in the United States after being convicted of illegally possessing a firearm while in the country on an F-1 student visa.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the incident happened in February 2025 during a domestic dispute outside his apartment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Investigators said a firearm was discharged multiple times, with bullets striking parts of the apartment complex. No fatalities were reported.
Authorities said Oghenebrume later admitted he fired the weapon to frighten his former partner into leaving. He was arrested shortly afterward, and the firearm was recovered.
Following his prison sentence, he is expected to face removal proceedings from the United States.
The case serves as a reminder that visa holders in the U.S. are subject to strict federal laws, including regulations governing firearm possession, and violations can carry serious criminal and immigration consequences.
