Louisiana HBCU Makes History with Largest Class of Black Male Nurses

Southern University and A&M College has made history after welcoming its largest-ever class of Black male nursing students, marking a powerful moment for diversity in healthcare.
The university’s School of Nursing currently has 33 Black male students enrolled in the program, the biggest cohort in the institution’s history. The achievement is being celebrated nationwide as a major step toward improving representation in the medical field.
Students say the milestone is about more than academics, it’s about changing perceptions and inspiring future generations. Many of the nursing students expressed pride in showing young Black men that careers in healthcare are possible and impactful.
The program also received a $339,000 grant from the American Nurses Foundation to help increase diversity in nursing research and education. School leaders believe having more culturally diverse healthcare professionals can improve patient trust and health outcomes in underserved communities.
This historic achievement comes at a time when Black men remain underrepresented in nursing across the United States, making the accomplishment even more significant.
