Latvia Is Facing a Demographic Imbalance and the Reason Is Deeper Than Dating
Latvia has one of the largest gender gaps in Europe, with women significantly outnumbering men especially in older age groups.
This imbalance didn’t happen overnight. Men in Latvia have historically faced higher mortality rates, often linked to heart disease, alcohol-related illnesses, and accidents. On average, men also have a shorter life expectancy than women.
Migration plays a role too. Many working-age men leave Latvia in search of better economic opportunities abroad, further reducing the male population at home.
The impact goes beyond dating:
• Fewer long-term partnerships and marriages
• Pressure on birth rates
• More women aging without partners
• Long-term social and caregiving challenges
Latvia’s situation shows how health, migration, and economic opportunity can quietly reshape a society and why investing in men’s health and local opportunities matters for everyone.
Do you think demographic imbalances like this can affect a country long-term?
