IF YOUR VISA EXPIRES AND YOU DON’T HAVE PR, YOU NEED TO GO HOME, SAYS ALBERTA PREMIER DANIELLE SMITH

A strong message from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is getting attention among international students in Canada.

Amid protests by international students facing difficulties obtaining Post-Graduation Work Permits, Smith said that students whose authorization to remain in Canada expires and who have not obtained permanent residency or another valid status need to leave Canada and return home.

Her comments highlight an important reality that prospective international students should understand:

Studying in Canada is NOT a guarantee of permanent residency.

Getting admission to a Canadian school does not automatically mean you will qualify for a PGWP, find a pathway to PR, or be able to remain in Canada permanently.

Before spending thousands of dollars on tuition and relocating to Canada, prospective students should carefully research:

▪︎ Whether their program qualifies for a PGWP
▪︎ What immigration pathways may be available after graduation
▪︎ Whether their field of study and occupation align with current opportunities
▪︎ Provincial and federal immigration requirements
▪︎ What their options are if they cannot qualify for PR

And most importantly, don’t rely solely on promises from agents, recruiters or social media. Immigration rules can change, and what worked for someone else may not work for you.

Canada can still offer tremendous opportunities—but coming as an international student should involve careful planning, realistic expectations and proper research.

If you’re planning to study in Canada, what is your biggest concern right now—tuition, PGWP, jobs, or PR?
