How to Transition into Teaching in Ontario with a Foreign B.Ed

If you earned your B.Ed outside Canada and have teaching experience, you do not need to start from the scratch. Teaching in Ontario for instance is regulated, and internationally trained teachers can qualify through the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). To teach in public schools, you must be certified by OCT.

Step 1: Gather your documents. You’ll need:
▪︎ Degree certificates and official transcripts
▪︎ Teaching licence from your home country (if available)
▪︎ Proof of teaching experience
▪︎ Valid ID
▪︎ Certified translations (if documents are not in English or French)
Some documents must be sent directly from your university or licensing authority to OCT.

Step 2: Apply to the Ontario College of Teachers
Create an account, submit your application, and pay the assessment fees. OCT will evaluate whether your foreign B.Ed is equivalent to Ontario standards.

Step 3: Meet any additional requirements (if required)
Depending on your assessment, OCT may ask you to complete:
▪︎ Additional education courses
▪︎ A practicum or teaching hours
▪︎ Language proficiency (if applicable)
Not everyone needs all of these,it depends on your training and experience.

Step 4: Get certified
Some applicants receive conditional or transitional certification while completing remaining requirements.

Step 5: Apply for teaching jobs in Ontario.
Once certified, you can apply to:
▪︎ Public school boards
▪︎ Catholic school boards
▪︎ Private schools
▪︎ Supply/occasional teaching positions (a common entry route)

If you were a teacher in your home country, your skills still matter. Most times, you need certification and alignment not a complete career change.
