HOW LONG SHOULD YOU WAIT FOR YOUR CAR INSURANCE TO RESPOND AFTER AN ACC*DENT?

have a genuine question for those who understand how car insurance works in Canada.
We pay our car insurance premiums every month, and the deduction usually happens right on schedule. But what happens when you actually need the insurance after an acc*dent?
Someone close to me, their car was hit by another driver more than 4 weeks ago. The necessary documentation has been completed, both insurance companies have been notified, and the police have also been involved.
But up until now, there still hasn’t been a resolution on the vehicle. The car is sitting there, and he has had to rely on Uber or Lyft to get to work.
This got me wondering: how long is someone normally expected to wait before an insurance company approves repairs or provides compensation after a collision?
I understand that claims may require investigation, assessment, determining fault, estimates and other processes. But when all the necessary documentation has been submitted, at what point does the waiting become unusually long?
So I’m genuinely curious, especially from those who have gone through this before:
How long did your car insurance claim take after an acc*dent? And if you’ve experienced a long delay, what was the reason given?
I’m asking because paying the monthly premium happens without delay, so naturally, you would expect the claims process to move reasonably quickly when you actually need the coverage. 🤔
Have you ever had to wait weeks for your vehicle to be repaired after an acc+dent?
