History Made! Nigerian Emerges as First-Ever Black President of Canada’s Medical Association
Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, a Nigerian-born physician, has made history as the first Black President of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), becoming the first Black person to lead the organization since it was founded in 1867.
His journey began in Lagos, Nigeria. At just three years old, he moved to Newfoundland, Canada, with his parents. They arrived in a province where very few Black families lived, carrying little more than hope, education, and a determination to build a better future.
His parents laid the foundation. His father, a neurology professor, pursued advanced medical training, while his mother was among the first women from her community in Nigeria to obtain post-secondary education. They believed that every sacrifice they made would one day open doors for their children.
Dr. Ogunyemi made the most of that opportunity. He became president of the Medical Student Society at Memorial University, completed his dermatology residency at the University of British Columbia, served as chief resident, and was selected as the Royal College convocation speaker for his graduating class.
But instead of staying where opportunities were greatest, he returned to Newfoundland, the community that welcomed his family years earlier. There, he built his career as a dermatologist, educator, and advocate for equity in healthcare and medical education, helping create opportunities for future generations.
On May 29, 2026, he reached another remarkable milestone by becoming President of the Canadian Medical Association. Nearly 160 years after the organization’s founding, history was made.
His achievement is a testament that immigrants do not simply arrive in a country, they contribute to it, strengthen it, and often become part of its greatest success stories.
For Nigerians and Africans across the diaspora, Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi’s story is proof that where you begin does not determine where you can end. Excellence, resilience, and service continue to open doors across the world.
Congratulations to Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi on this remarkable achievement. May his story inspire countless young Africans to dream boldly, work diligently, and never underestimate the power of perseverance.
What message does Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi’s achievement send to young Africans at home and abroad?
