GHANA WANTS TO SUPPLY ELECTRICITY TO NIGERIA — AND HERE’S WHY THAT SHOULDN’T BE AN INSULT TO NIGERIA

Ghana is working toward supplying electricity to Nigeria, and some Nigerians are already asking: “Why Ghana? Nigeria is the Giant of Africa”
But perhaps we should look at this differently.
Being the “Giant of Africa” does not mean Nigeria must produce everything it needs on its own.
Canada exports electricity to the United States, and Canada also imports electricity from the U.S. In fact, electricity regularly crosses the Canada–U.S. border in both directions because energy systems are interconnected and countries buy or sell power depending on supply, demand and market conditions.
So if Ghana eventually supplies electricity to Nigeria, the real question should not be “Why Ghana?”
The better question is: “Can the arrangement provide reliable and affordable electricity while benefiting Nigerians?”
And there is another interesting angle: Ghana has previously discussed an arrangement where it could use Nigerian gas to generate electricity and potentially supply power back to Nigeria. That is not weakness. That is regional trade.
Countries don’t have to compete over who is bigger before they can do business with each other. They can use their different strengths to create opportunities, improve reliability and support economic growth.
The most important thing is not who supplies the electricity. The most important thing is whether Nigerians get more reliable power, businesses can operate better, and the economy benefits.
Sometimes, being a giant means knowing when to produce, when to trade, and when to collaborate.
What do you think? Should Nigeria welcome regional electricity partnerships if they can improve power supply and benefit the economy?
