Canada Faces a Growing Immigration Status Challenge
Recent data from IRCC shows that about 1,053,000 work permits expired by the end of 2025, with another 927,000 expected to expire in 2026 a historically large wave of permit expiries.
Experts warn that if many of these temporary residents cannot secure new visas or transition to permanent residency especially in a context of tighter immigration rules the number of people living without valid status could grow significantly by mid-2026.
A large share of the permits at risk involve Indian nationals.
Canada has also implemented stricter pathways and caps on extensions and permanent residency categories, making it harder for some temporary workers and international students to regularize their stay.
If your work or study permit is expiring soon, it’s important to plan early including renewal options or pathways to permanent status to avoid loss of status or complications.
