CANADA CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATE WAIT TIMES ARE RISING.

If you’re waiting for a Canadian citizenship certificate, this is an update you may want to pay attention to.

As of mid-2026, IRCC reported 99,520 proof-of-citizenship applications still waiting to be finalized. That’s a significant number of people waiting to receive proof of their Canadian citizenship.

And here’s something important to understand:
A citizenship certificate is NOT the same as applying to become a Canadian citizen.

A citizenship certificate is proof for someone who is already a Canadian citizen for example, if they need proof of citizenship, lost their previous certificate, or need to update or replace it.

IRCC says processing times can vary depending on factors such as the type of application, whether the application is complete, how easily information can be verified and whether additional information is required.

So if you’ve already applied, keep checking your application status and respond promptly if IRCC asks for additional information.

And if you’re preparing to apply, double-check your forms and supporting documents before submitting. An incomplete application can cause additional delays.
