AUSTRALIA CHANGES STUDENT VISA RULES: FAMILIES MAY NO LONGER BE ABLE TO COME AUTOMATICALLY
Planning to study in Australia with your spouse or children? There’s a new immigration change you should know about.
On September 17, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced reforms that will restrict the ability of most international students and Temporary Graduate visa holders to add family members to their visas.
But there are important exceptions
• Families who are already in Australia with the visa holder will not be separated because of this change.
• Some Pacific and ASEAN nationals will continue to have family-member options.
• Students in certain courses, including PhD programs, will also be covered by exceptions.
The Australian government says the broader reforms are intended to give it greater control over temporary migration, address visa hopping and respond to housing pressures. It is targeting net overseas migration forecasts of 245,000 in 2026–27 and 225,000 in 2027–28.
If you’re planning to study in Australia with your family, check the rules that apply to your nationality, course and visa before making travel or application plans.
Would you consider studying in Australia if you could not automatically bring your spouse or children with you?
