A 6-YEAR-OLD SHOT HIS TEACHER — AND THE NEWLY RELEASED BODYCAM FOOTAGE HAS PEOPLE TALKING

In 2023, a six-year-old student at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia sh%t his teacher, Abby Zwerner, with a g&n he took from his mother’s home. He was not cr!m!nally charged because prosecutors determined that his age made cr!m!nal prosecution inappropriate.

Newly released body-camera footage from that day has sparked another wave of conversations. The footage shows the child using profanity, confronting adults and telling officers that he did not care about going to jail.

His mother had said that her son had ADHD, which has led to an important debate: Was his behaviour connected to his diagnosis, his environment, parenting, or a combination of different factors?

As someone trained to work with children and young people with developmental and mental disabilities, I believe this conversation needs some balance.

Children with the same diagnosis can behave very differently. A diagnosis does not automatically explain or excuse every behaviour, and behaviour can also be influenced by many other factors, including environment, learning, supervision, emotional regulation and previous experiences.

What happened was extremely serious, and there are questions about how the child gained access to a fire@rm in the first place. His mother was later prosecuted in connection with the case and sentenced to nearly 4 years in pr!s0n

What do you think, do you believe this case points more to parenting and environmental factors, behavioural support needs, or a combination of several factors? Let’s have a respectful conversation
