FROM GHANA TO THE U.S. AT JUST 18: Meet the Teen Who Became a PhD Student While Others Were Starting University

Ruth Ama Gyan-Darkwa is proving that age is no barrier to greatness.
At just 18 years old, the brilliant Ghanaian made history by becoming the youngest PhD student in the University of New Mexico’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She enrolled in the doctoral program after an extraordinary academic journey that began years earlier.
Her achievements are nothing short of remarkable:
Entered the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at just 13 years old to study Mathematics.
Graduated with a BSc in Mathematics at age 17 in 2021, becoming Ghana’s youngest university graduate.
Now pursuing a PhD in the United States, Ruth’s research focuses on optics and lasers, and she has shared her dream of one day working with NASA.
Her story is a powerful reminder that talent, discipline, and determination can open doors regardless of age.
Congratulations to Ruth Ama Gyan-Darkwa for inspiring young Africans and the global Black community to dream bigger.
Would you encourage your child to skip grades if they were academically ready?
