First Black African in Australia’s Parliament: The Inspiring Story of Lucy Gichuhi

Growing up in Hiriga Village, Mathira, Nyeri County, Lucy Gichuhi could never have imagined that her journey would one day make history thousands of kilometres away in Australia.
As the eldest of ten children, she walked to school barefoot, milked cows, worked on the family farm, and helped raise her younger siblings. Despite the challenges, her parents taught her the importance of hard work, faith, resilience, and education.
Determined to build a brighter future, Lucy worked as an accountant in Kenya before relocating to Australia with her husband and three daughters in 1999. Like many immigrants, she had to start from scratch in a new country. Through dedication and perseverance, she established herself professionally, earned a law degree, and became deeply involved in serving her community.
Then history was made.
In April 2017, Lucy was elected as a Senator for South Australia, becoming the first Black African ever elected to Australia’s Parliament.
Her remarkable achievement sent a powerful message to Africans and immigrants around the world: your background does not define your future. With determination, integrity, and hard work, barriers can be broken, and history can be made.
From walking barefoot in rural Kenya to taking her seat in Australia’s Parliament, Lucy Gichuhi’s story proves that no dream is too big and no beginning is too humble.
Congratulations to Lucy Gichuhi for making Kenya, Africa, and the global African diaspora proud!
