Ontario Raises Highway Speed Limits to 110 km/h on Nearly 1,000 km of Roads
Good news for Ontario drivers: the provincial government is increasing speed limits from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on approximately 938 kilometres of major highways across the province.
Announced by Prabmeet Sarkaria on Wednesday, the move is aimed at helping motorists reach their destinations faster while maintaining road safety standards.
The first speed-limit increases take effect this Friday on sections of Highway 401 and Highway 416 in Eastern Ontario. By the end of September, additional stretches of the following highways will also see the higher limit:
🚗 Highway 401
🚗 Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW)
🚗 Highway 402
🚗 Highway 403
🚗 Highway 416
🚗 Highway 417
The initiative follows a review launched by Ontario Premier Doug Ford in 2024 after earlier speed-limit increases were introduced on several highways in 2022 and 2024.
According to the province, the changes could save drivers valuable time. A trip from Sarnia to Toronto may be nearly 20 minutes shorter, while travel between Toronto and Ottawa could be reduced by almost 30 minutes.
Ontario has also confirmed that the future Bradford Bypass and Highway 413 are being designed with a 110 km/h speed limit in mind.
Officials say the higher limits are only being introduced on highway sections that have undergone safety assessments and are considered suitable for faster travel.
What do you think? Should more Ontario highways be increased to 110 km/h, or do you have concerns about safety?
