Kene Ilochonwu: The First Black Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta Canada

Kene Ilochonwu made history when he was elected as the first Black Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta, marking a significant milestone for diversity and representation in Canada’s legal profession.
Born and raised in Nigeria, Kene earned his law degree from Abia State University and was called to the Nigerian Bar before pursuing a Master of Laws degree in Scotland. After relocating to Canada, he faced the challenge many internationally trained professionals know all too well—starting over.
Rather than giving up, Kene persevered. He worked in the oil and gas industry while requalifying as a lawyer in Alberta, completed his articling with leading organizations, and built a successful legal career that led him to become Legal Counsel at Parkland Corporation.
Beyond his professional achievements, Kene is passionate about mentorship. Having benefited from mentors throughout his own journey, he dedicates his time to supporting internationally trained lawyers, law students, and newcomers navigating the Canadian legal system.
His election as Bencher was not just a personal victory, it was a victory for diversity, inclusion, and the many aspiring Black and immigrant professionals who can now see themselves represented in leadership.
Kene’s story is a testament that resilience, excellence, and service can break barriers and open doors for future generations.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable Nigerian making a lasting impact in Canada and inspiring others around the world.
