Why Some Men Are Afraid to Relocate Abroad With Their Wives

Let’s be honest. One silent fear some men have about relocating abroad with their wives is uncertainty.

They’ve heard stories.
Stories of “peaceful” marriages back home that suddenly fell apart after relocation. And it makes them wonder. What changed?

The truth is marriage back home can be very different from marriage abroad. In many African settings, extended family support, domestic help, and traditional gender roles play a big part in how a home functions.

But abroad? Marriage becomes a true partnership. There is no house help. No parents, uncles or aunties stepping in. No brothers or sisters running errands. It’s just the two of you.
You must:
• Have honest conversations
• Plan finances together
• Be transparent
• Avoid hidden agendas
• Stop trying to outsmart each other

When one person is on shift, the other steps in. Cleaning, school runs, teamwork. Be transparent with finances. Abroad only expose cracks if they already exist, it doesn’t create them. But it will also strengthen couples who are intentional.

Sacrifices must be made. Some habits must be unlearned. New ones must be learned. Relocation doesn’t destroy marriages. It reveals them.

What do you think, does moving abroad strengthen or strain a marriage?
