7 Things African immigrants Should Avoid After Moving to Canada

Moving to Canada is a major life change. You don’t have to abandon your culture or forget where you came from but some things may need to change if you want to thrive here.
1. Don’t try to impress people with what you own.
You don’t need a new car, expensive clothes or a big apartment just to look successful. Build your finances first. Looking successful and being financially stable are two different things.
2. Don’t compare your journey to everyone else’s.
Someone may have arrived before you, bought a house or landed a high-paying job. That’s their journey. Focus on your own progress instead of competing with what you see on social media.
3. Don’t limit your network to only people from your community. Your African community can be an incredible support system. But also build relationships with people from different backgrounds, learn how Canadian institutions work and expand your professional network.
4. Don’t assume the rules are the same as back home. Canada has its own laws, systems and expectations. Whether it’s driving, employment, taxes, immigration or other areas of life, take time to understand the rules and follow them.
5. Don’t send so much money home and you’re struggling here. Supporting family is admirable, but you also need to build your own foundation. Pay your bills, save for emergencies and plan for your future before taking on financial responsibilities you can’t comfortably afford.
6. Don’t be afraid to start small.
Your qualifications and experience from Africa may not immediately lead to the job you want. Taking a temporary step back doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Use the opportunity to gain Canadian experience while working toward your bigger goal.
7. Don’t think you have to choose between being African and becoming Canadian..You can learn and adapt to life in Canada while proudly maintaining your African culture, values, language, food and traditions. Integration doesn’t mean losing your identity.
Canada can offer immigrants opportunities, but success also requires learning, adapting and growing.
Come with your culture. Come with your values.
Come with your ambition. But also be willing to learn, adapt and do things differently when necessary.
