54-Year-Old Nigerian Catholic Priest Passes Away Days After Being Asked to Return to Nigeria

The passing of Rev. Benjamin Okwy Madu, a 54-year-old Nigerian Catholic priest, has sparked heartfelt conversations about mental health, immigration challenges, and the safety concerns facing some religious leaders in Nigeria.
According to the Archdiocese of Boston, Rev. Madu passed away on July 2 at his residence in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, where he had faithfully served as a hospital chaplain and parish priest since 2021.
His religious worker visa was set to expire on July 29, and his home Diocese of Abakaliki had directed him to return to Nigeria ahead of a new assignment scheduled to begin on August 4.
Reports say Rev. Madu had expressed concerns about returning to Nigeria and shared that leaving the United States was not his personal choice but was due to circumstances beyond his control.
A few days before his passing, he reportedly experienced a severe panic attack while driving to celebrate Mass and received medical attention at a local hospital.
Boston Archbishop Richard Henning later informed fellow priests that Rev. Madu’s death was a suicide. The Archdiocese’s initial public statement announcing his passing did not include the cause of death.
A US-Nigeria Civil Society Coalition stated that the priest had been under intense emotional strain over the prospect of returning to a region where some Catholic clergy have faced kidnappings and violent attacks. The group also said immigration restrictions affected his ability to remain in the United States.
Following his passing, the coalition called on US authorities to reconsider deportations involving Nigerians and to explore Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible Nigerian nationals.
This loss shows that emotional struggles can affect anyone, regardless of their faith, profession, or background. If someone around you appears to be struggling, a kind conversation, support, or encouraging them to seek professional help can make a meaningful difference.
