$28.9M Jet for Doug Ford: Smart Investment or Bad Timing?

Ontario’s government has confirmed the purchase of a $28.9 million pre-owned Challenger 650 jet, intended for Premier Doug Ford’s travel across the province and to the U.S. for trade discussions.
Officials say the move is practical and cost-effective, arguing that maintaining a dedicated aircraft can reduce long-term expenses compared to frequent chartering. They also point out that other provinces and the federal government already spend similar or even more on aviation needs.
But not everyone is convinced.
Critics argue the timing couldn’t be worse. With many Ontarians facing rising living costs, they say the purchase sends the wrong message suggesting that chartered flights or shared government aircraft would have been a more responsible option.
Supporters, however, see it differently. They emphasize:
Faster response times across a large province
Greater flexibility for urgent travel
Stronger support for cross-border trade efforts
So what’s the real issue here?
Is this about efficiency and leadership mobility, or does it come down to optics and priorities during tough economic times?
One thing is clear: decisions like this aren’t just about numbers—they’re about public trust and perception.
What do you think, necessary investment or wrong timing?
