27-Year-Old Nigerian Mother Passed Away in the UK After Mental Health Struggles

The tragic passing of 27-year-old Nigerian mother, Beatrice Solomon, has left many people saddened both in the UK and back home in Nigeria.
An inquest has concluded that Beatrice died after a long battle with mental health challenges. She had moved to Stoke-on-Trent, UK, in 2023, where she worked as a carer while raising her young son and trying to build a better future.
According to the inquest, she had been struggling emotionally for about a year. Her husband found her unresponsive at their home, and despite emergency responders’ efforts, she could not be saved. The investigation found no evidence of anyone else’s involvement.
The coroner ruled that her death followed careful planning, highlighting the devastating impact untreated or overwhelming mental health struggles can have.
This heartbreaking story is a reminder that mental illness is real. Depression, anxiety, and emotional distress do not always show on the outside. Many people carry heavy burdens behind smiles, especially those living far from home, separated from family and familiar support systems.
To everyone in the African diaspora and beyond:
Check in on your loved ones regularly.
Don’t ignore signs that someone may be struggling emotionally.
Encourage those who are hurting to seek professional help without shame.
If you are struggling yourself, please know that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Beatrice leaves behind a young son, siblings, and many who will mourn her loss.
May her soul rest in peace, and may her story inspire more compassion, understanding, and conversations about mental health.
