2 In-Demand Careers That Could Change Your Life in Canada

One of the best career options to consider in Ontario is becoming a Developmental Support Worker (DSW) or a Child and Youth Worker (CYW).

● Developmental Support Workers (DSWs) provide care and support to people with developmental or intellectual disabilities, helping them live as independently as possible. You can work in:
• Group homes
• Hospitals
• Schools
• Community agencies
• Day programs
• Long-term care and supported living facilities

● Child and Youth Workers (CYWs) support children and teenagers facing emotional, behavioural, or mental health challenges. They work in:
• Schools
• Children’s mental health agencies
• Youth shelters
• Residential treatment homes
• Community organizations
• Correctional and rehabilitation programs

● How long does it take to qualify?
Most DSW and Child & Youth Worker diploma programs at Ontario colleges take 2 years to complete. However, there are also accelerated certificate or private career college programs that can be completed in 12 and 18 months, depending on the school and program.

These careers are in demand because Ontario continues to need more professionals to support individuals with disabilities, mental health needs, and vulnerable children and youth.

● What about the pay?
In Ontario, many DSW and Child & Youth Worker positions pay approximately $24–$37 per hour depending on your experience, specialized training, overtime, and the employer you work for.

If you have a passion for helping people, enjoy making a difference, and want a career with meaningful impact and good job opportunities, these are definitely worth considering.
