Our Voices Matter So Do Our Lives: A Message to Immigrants on Peaceful Protest
As newcomers and immigrants, many of us came here seeking safety, dignity, and a better future. We understand pain. We understand frustration. And we understand the desire to speak up when things don’t feel right.
Protest is a right. Violence is not a solution.
Recent events in Minneapolis remind us of a hard truth: when protests turn confrontational, lives can be lost often ordinary people who only wanted to be heard. That is a loss no cause can justify.
Respecting law enforcement, including ICE, does NOT mean you agree with every policy.
It means you value life, safety, and the power of peaceful action.
Here’s how we can make our voices count without putting ourselves in danger: Protest peacefully. Calm voices carry further than anger.
Keep a safe distance from law enforcement during demonstrations.
Avoid insults, threats, or physical confrontation.
Know your rights and stay within the law. Use other powerful tools: writing leaders, community forums, media, and civic engagement.
As immigrants, our stories matter. Our voices matter.
But our lives matter more.
You don’t have to be confrontational to be courageous.
You don’t have to be aggressive to demand change.
Peaceful protest is strength not weakness.
Let’s speak with wisdom. Let’s act with respect.
Let’s protect our communities while pushing for progress.
