What Happened at the U.S.–Quebec Border?

Some group of migrants who tried crossing from the U.S. into Quebec on 25th December 2025 were arrested and sent back to the United States.

The reason is simple: they entered Canada through an unofficial border route. Under the Canada–U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, asylum seekers are expected to apply for protection in the first safe country they arrive in. Since they came from the U.S., Canada returned them there.

This situation reminds us that immigration is guided by laws and agreements, not just hopes. Irregular border crossings especially in winter, can be dangerous and legally risky.

Knowing the rules helps people make safer and better-informed decisions.
