River Ottawa: 2 Years Old Swept Away by Powerful River Current

A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the city of Ottawa after a two-year-old child lost their life Friday evening after being swept away by strong currents in the Ottawa River near the Kichi Zībī Mīkan Parkway.
According to reports, Ottawa Police Service received an emergency call just before 7 p.m. about a missing child in the water. A massive rescue operation quickly began involving marine dive teams, tactical units, air support, and assistance from the Gatineau Police Service.
About 40 minutes later, the child was located in the river by the police air support unit. First responders immediately performed life-saving efforts before the toddler was rushed to hospital. Sadly, the child was later pronounced dead.
Police say the toddler had been near the water with a family member when the fast-moving current suddenly carried them away. Investigators are treating the incident as a tragic accident, while reminding the public that rising water levels and strong river currents remain extremely dangerous during this season.
This devastating loss is a painful reminder that nature can change in seconds. Parents and guardians are being urged to stay extra vigilant around rivers, lakes, and waterfronts, especially with young children.
May the child rest in peace, and may strength and comfort be with the grieving family during this unimaginable time.
