USA Reopens Doors for Nigerian Doctors Amid Massive Healthcare Shortage

In a major policy shift, the United States has lifted its visa restrictions on foreign-trained doctors bringing renewed hope to many Nigerian physicians who were left stranded.
According to The New York Times, the earlier policy had frozen visa processing, leaving many doctors in uncertainty some unable to work, others at risk of losing their jobs entirely.
Now, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has officially updated its guidelines, confirming that medical doctors are exempt and their applications will continue to be processed.
A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security made it clear:
“Applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing.”
The U.S. is currently battling a serious healthcare crisis, with an estimated shortage of 65,000 doctors a number expected to rise.
Foreign-trained doctors already make up about 25% of the U.S. medical workforce, especially serving rural and underserved communities where help is needed most.
