A Simple Act of Kindness That Changed Everything: Syracuse, Officer James Pastorello

On a freezing day in Syracuse, Officer James Pastorello , noticed a woman struggling to carry groceries through Thornden Park. He stopped and offered her a ride—something small, but it turned into something life-changing.
The woman, Rhea Holmes, became emotional. She told him she was heading to Oakwood Cemetery to visit her father and her late husband, Rev. Eddie Holmes.
But what Officer Pastorello didn’t know was heartbreaking…
After losing her husband, Rhea’s life took a devastating turn. She lost her job, was evicted, and ended up sleeping at the cemetery for months staying close to her husband’s grave because it was the only place she felt safe.
💔 Until someone cared enough to stop.
Officer Pastorello stepped in, got her into a hotel, and connected her with long-term support. He even launched a fundraiser—raising over $86,000 to help her rebuild her life.
Because of that one act of kindness, Rhea now has a safe place to live, thanks to A Tiny Home for Good.
Her story touched hearts across the country and was featured on On the Road with Steve Hartman.
When asked why he helped, Officer Pastorello simply said:
“It was the right thing to do.”
And for Rhea, that “right thing” meant everything.
Sometimes, all it takes is one person to stop, care, and change a life forever.
