Let’s be honest getting interviews in Canada is already hard
Let’s be honest getting interviews in Canada is already hard. For every one job opportunity, there are hundreds applications, so when you finally get one invite for an interview, you don’t want to ruin your chances with small but costly mistakes.
Here are 5 common mistakes many newcomers make during job interviews:
1. Talking Too Much (Or Too Little)
Some people answer with one sentence and stop. Others turn every question into a 10-minute life story. In Canada, interviewers prefer clear, structured answers. Use examples. Be specific. Keep it relevant.
2. Not Researching the Company
When they ask, “What do you know about us?” and you say, “Not much…” 😅
That’s a red flag.
Always research the company’s website, mission, and values. It shows seriousness and interest.
3. Focusing Only on Qualifications, Not Soft Skills. Back home, we often emphasize degrees and certifications.
But here, employers also care about:
• Communication
• Teamwork
• Problem-solving
• Adaptability
It’s not just what you know it’s how you work with people.
4. Speaking Negatively About Previous Employers
Even if your last workplace was difficult, avoid criticizing them during interviews.
It makes employers wonder how you’ll talk about them in the future. Stay professional. Stay calm.
5. Not Preparing for Behavioural Questions
In Canada, you’ll often hear:
“Tell me about a time when…”
They want real examples.
Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answer.
The truth is, interviews here are not just about competence. They’re about confidence, communication, and cultural understanding.
If you’re job hunting right now, don’t just apply, prepare well enough.
Feel free to add to the list. Which of these do you think affects newcomers the most? How was your first interview experience in Canada? Let’s talk in the comments 👇
